Hurricane Polo regains strength and reaches category 5 off the Mexican Pacific
Hurricane Polo has intensified its power significantly, returning to category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale as it moves off the Pacific coast of Mexico. According to the most recent reports, this meteorological phenomenon presents maximum sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 310 kilometers per hour, keeping various entities in the west of the country on alert.
Although the center of the cyclone remains over the waters of the Pacific Ocean, its proximity has generated an active surveillance zone from Tecpan de Galeana, in Guerrero, to Playa Pérula, in Jalisco. Meteorological authorities indicate that, for the moment, the storm is not expected to make landfall, maintaining a trajectory that keeps it away from the continental coast.
Rainfall forecast and risks for the population
Although the center of the hurricane remains offshore, its cloud bands are causing dangerous weather conditions. Torrential rainfall is expected, with accumulations of up to 250 millimeters, mainly affecting the coastal areas of Michoacán and Guerrero, as well as intense rains in Colima, Jalisco, and Oaxaca.
Authorities have warned that the combination of heavy rains and high swells, which could exceed 8 meters in height, poses a latent risk of landslides, river overflows, and potential flooding in vulnerable areas.
Prevention and security deployment measures
Given the dangerous nature of the phenomenon, various state governments, including Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Colima, have decided to suspend school activities to safeguard the well-being of students. Meanwhile, security and public service institutions have activated emergency protocols:
- Federal Electricity Commission (CFE): Deployment of 2,000 specialized workers across seven states to address potential power outages.
- Secretariat of the Navy: Mobilization of nearly 14,000 agents, in addition to vessels and land vehicles, ready for relief efforts in nine states.
- Ports: Partial and total navigation restrictions at critical points such as Acapulco and Zihuatanejo.
