Hansel García questions police reform after tragedy in Capotillo
Communicator Hansel García expressed deep indignation following the tragic death of Wilmary Ramírez Sánchez, a fourteen-year-old teenager in the Capotillo sector. During his participation in the program Esto No es Radio Show, García called into question the effectiveness of the current police reform process, questioning the profile of the officers who are being integrated under this new model.
The case involves officer Edwin Santos Guerrero, 23, who allegedly maintained an abusive relationship with the minor. According to what was stated on the radio program, the police officer took advantage of his closeness to the young woman and his position of authority to hold meetings, even alleging that these had occurred inside the police station where he served.
Doubts about the “new police model”
García was emphatic in pointing out the contradiction that this event represents for the transformation objectives of the National Police. The analyst questioned whether these types of behaviors reflect the values that are supposed to govern the new officers trained within the framework of the reform.
Is this police officer part of the new police reform? Is he one of those trained at the luxury hotel in Gaspar Hernandez, studied under the police reform, part of that new profile? What is it that we are creating? What is it that we are training?
Hansel GarcíaThe communicator described the situation as “hopeless” and maintained that, far from representing a positive change, these types of events suggest that there is no real transformation in institutional practices, noting that the agent’s conduct is an aggravating factor that affects citizen trust.
Demand for an in-depth investigation
Given the gravity of the accusations, García made a direct appeal to the National Police authorities for the case to be handled with the utmost rigor. In particular, he requested that the Internal Affairs Directorate investigate the possible irregularities committed at the precinct, including the possibility that improper acts may have been carried out on the premises.
- The Public Prosecutor’s Office is working on the request for pretrial detention against officer Santos Guerrero.
- Family members and members of the Capotillo community have held demonstrations demanding justice.
- The exact circumstances of the death are being investigated, following questions about the initial handling of the crime scene and the removal of the body.
García concluded his speech by emphasizing that, beyond the legal aspect, there is a moral crisis that must be addressed with urgency to protect the country’s girls and adolescents, reiterating that the institution in charge of ensuring safety cannot be a protagonist in these types of tragedies.
