Gilbert Gómez takes command at Tigres del Licey training
Manager Gilbert Gómez joined the Tigres del Licey practices this Thursday, which are being held at the Toronto Blue Jays’ facilities in Baseball City, Boca Chica. With this addition, the strategist begins his sixth season within the blue organization, a club where he has climbed positions from quality control coach to establishing himself as the leader of the dugout.
A history of success in LIDOM
Gómez arrives after a historic tenure at the helm of the felines, having led the team to win the championship in the 2023-24 season and reaching two consecutive Final Series. With this achievement, he entered the record books of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) by becoming the youngest championship manager in history, at 31 years and 324 days old, surpassing the record previously held by Audo Vicente.
Gilbert Gómez joins the select group of only seven native managers who have managed to lift the championship trophy in their debut season in Dominican winter baseball.
Meteoric rise in the Major Leagues
His technical ability has not gone unnoticed internationally. During the recent off-season, the New York Mets announced Gómez as their first base and outfield coach for the upcoming Major League season. This appointment reaffirms his status as one of the young figures with the greatest potential in the technical field of organized baseball.
- Initially signed by the Mets in 2009.
- Selected by Licey in the 2012 Rookie Draft.
- Retired as an active player in 2017 to focus on coaching.
- Champion in 2025 with the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets’ High-A affiliate.
- International experience as a coach for the Dominican national team during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Reinforcements on the ground
In addition to Gómez’s arrival, the 24-time national champions welcomed catcher Francisco Mejía this Thursday. The experienced player joins the training sessions after seeing action with the Diablos Rojos in the Mexican Baseball League, strengthening the depth of the blue roster ahead of the competitive challenges that lie ahead.
