The 32-year-old veteran returned to the United States in critical health condition, after having faced an imprisonment that his loved ones and U.S. authorities described as unjust and marked by inhumane treatment.
Gilman’s release came after direct negotiations between President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. According to statements by the U.S. president, this resolution was based primarily on humanitarian grounds.
