Extreme heat alert in the Dominican Republic: Temperatures will exceed 37 °C
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has issued a warning to citizens regarding the persistence of an extreme heat environment affecting a large part of the national territory. Although the calendar is advancing toward the last quarter of the year, atmospheric conditions maintain high temperatures that will continue to impact the daily routine of Dominicans.
According to meteorological projections, between September 9 and 15, the heat index is expected to exceed 37 °C for at least three consecutive days, with the northwest region being the area at greatest risk. This scenario will be aggravated by the arrival of significant concentrations of Saharan dust, which could reach levels exceeding 100 micrograms per cubic meter over the weekend.
Recent historical heat records
The intensity of the heat in the last week has been evident. Between September 2nd and 8th, the country experienced maximum temperatures that ranged between 37.7 °C and 39.3 °C. These values reflect the severity of the current climate:
- Mao, Valverde: 39.3 °C (recorded on September 6).
- Sabaneta, Santiago Rodríguez: 39.2 °C.
- Jimaní, Independencia: 38.5 °C.
- Altamira, Puerto Plata: 38.3 °C.
- Santiago de los Caballeros: 38.2 °C.
- Dajabón: 38.1 °C.
- La Vega: 38.0 °C.
- San Francisco de Macorís: 37.7 °C.
Although thermometers may not always reach 40 °C, the heat index will be significantly higher, especially in sectors of the center and east of the country, where the heat will remain intense for consecutive days.
