Failed challenges: The Leones del Escogido and ABS technology at the start of the season
The debut of the 2026-2027 season of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) brought with it the premiere of the automated balls and strikes system (ABS), a technology that has generated immediate reactions on the field. During the inaugural matchup between the Leones del Escogido and the Tigres del Licey at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, the scarlet team was the first to test the effectiveness of the new mechanism.
The red team’s strategy was cut short when attempting to reverse referee decisions through this system, accumulating two failed attempts in their challenges. The technological scenario, designed to bring precision to the game, became a tactical obstacle for the Escogido during their first engagement.
The specific case of Jeremy Rhodes
One of the most tense moments occurred when pitcher Jeremy Rhodes requested a system review. The hurler disagreed with the home plate umpire’s call, who had signaled a pitch as a ball that, in the player’s judgment, should have been ruled a strike.
Following the technical review of the ABS system, the umpire’s original decision was confirmed, validating that the pitch did not meet the parameters to be classified as a strike, which resulted in the second unsuccessful challenge for the Lions team.
This start of the campaign sets an important precedent in the way LIDOM teams manage their challenge opportunities, highlighting the importance of technical adaptation for both players and the coaching staff in this new era of Dominican winter baseball.
