Environment Ministry halts construction project in Samaná due to damage to a stream
The Provincial Directorate of Environment and Natural Resources in Samaná has taken decisive measures after detecting irregularities in a project located in the La Bonita sector. The institution ordered the immediate suspension and the corresponding sanction for those responsible for the construction of a gabion wall that was directly affecting the bed of a local stream.
The intervention of environmental authorities was prompted by citizen complaints, which alerted about potential damage to the ecosystem. After receiving the reports, the technical team moved to the site to conduct an exhaustive inspection and evaluate the terrain conditions, as well as the degree of compliance with current regulations for the protection of water bodies.
Technical determination: Infeasible project
After completing the field evaluations, the Ministry of Environment determined that the project lacks environmental viability. The main reason is that the building is located within the mandatory protection zone established for the banks of water bodies, contravening the provisions of Law 64-00 on Environment and Natural Resources.
The Provincial Directorate of Environment of Samaná reaffirmed its commitment to respond to environmental complaints and ensure compliance with regulations, especially regarding interventions that may affect streams, rivers, and other water resources in the province.
With this action, the Samaná authorities reaffirm their zero-tolerance stance against unauthorized interventions that put the preservation of the province’s natural resources at risk, ensuring that they will remain vigilant against any activity that threatens the ecological balance of the area.
