Elsa de León resigns as consul in Hamburg after reporting a lack of institutional support
Diplomat Elsa de León has formalized her resignation as Consul General of the Dominican Republic in Hamburg, Germany. The decision was communicated this Tuesday from the National Congress, where the official explained that her administration has been hindered by a notable lack of resources and the administrative support necessary to operate efficiently.
De León, who assumed the position on March 19, 2025, by appointment of President Luis Abinader, stated that his departure is due to the impossibility of fulfilling his responsibilities under current conditions. According to his statements, the consulate in Hamburg faces operational deficiencies that prevent proper management.
If the president can do it well, why can’t we do it well? The Hamburg consulate simply does not work, that is why I am resigning.

The former official stressed that, although she recognizes the work of the current Minister of Foreign Affairs and the constant dedication of the Dominican president, the structure she had in Germany was insufficient. So far, neither the Executive Branch nor the Foreign Ministry has issued an official statement regarding this resignation.
Report environmental irregularities in Las Terrenas
In addition to her departure from the foreign service, Elsa de León took advantage of her speech in the Chamber of Deputies to raise a strong complaint regarding the environmental situation in Las Terrenas, Samaná province. The diplomat described the authorizations granted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in that area as criminal permits.

- Excessive exploitation of mountain resources.
De León made a direct call to the head of the Environment Ministry, Paino Henríquez, urging him to leave his comfort zone and conduct an aerial inspection of the province. The leader emphasized that the Las Terrenas ecosystem is at risk of suffering irreversible damage if corrective measures are not taken immediately to halt these practices.
