Update on the earthquake impact in Colombia: Official figures
The president of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, offered an updated report on the situation the country is going through after the devastating earthquake that occurred on August 10. According to the information provided by the president, the official number of fatalities stands at 289, adjusting the figure previously released by other authorities.
During his national address, De la Espriella detailed the scope of the tragedy that has struck numerous communities. In addition to the confirmed deaths, the official report indicates that there are 4,187 injured people and 143 individuals who remain missing.
Material damage and affected families
The magnitude of the earthquake has left a deep mark on the country’s housing infrastructure. According to government records, the situation is summarized in the following critical points:
- More than 120,328 families have been registered as affected by the natural disaster.
- 26,945 homes are counted as having total destruction.
- A total of 127,557 households present considerable structural damage.
