Dominican government advocates for extending international force mandate in Haiti
The Government of the Dominican Republic has expressed its firm support for the renewal of the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) operating in Haiti. Before the United Nations Security Council, the Dominican authorities proposed that, upon the conclusion of the current extension, a one-year extension be considered to ensure stability in the neighboring country.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, emphasized the importance of granting this international mission the time and resources essential to complete its full deployment. According to the chancellor, the magnitude of the challenges faced by security forces against criminal gangs requires long-term planning that provides greater predictability to the nations contributing troops and supplies.
Security as a regional priority
Since the end of September, the Dominican State has insisted that the MSS still does not have the full 5,550 personnel originally projected. Therefore, the official position emphasizes that the renewal of the mandate must be accompanied by a real commitment from the international community regarding funding, equipment, and logistical support.
- Need to complete the deployment of the 5,550 troops.
- Request for a one-year extension to strengthen operational capacity.
- Comprehensive approach combining security, institutional recovery, and development.
Haiti’s solution lies in Haiti, and it is up to the international community to contribute to making it possible there. The Haitian people do not expect more promises; they expect results.
Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Bisonó reiterated that the Dominican Republic maintains its position that the crisis in Haiti requires sustainable solutions led internally, but supported by an international community that turns its commitments into concrete actions. Strengthening the neighboring country’s institutions remains the central objective to achieve lasting peace in the region.
