Historic qualification: Dominican Republic secures its ticket to the U-18 World Cup
The Dominican Republic has written a golden page in its sports history by winning the bronze medal at the U-18 Pan American Baseball Championship. Under the strategic leadership of Mendy López Jr., the national team achieved an epic comeback to defeat Puerto Rico 15-11, thus securing their spot for the upcoming 2027 China World Cup.
This triumph represents an unprecedented milestone for the country in this regional tournament, consolidating the effort of a group of young talents who knew how to remain calm in the face of adversity. The victory not only grants third place in the competition, but also confirms the constant growth of local baseball in the formative categories.
A path of resilience and offensive power
The match, played at Field 1 of the IPL Academy, was a true rollercoaster of emotions. Puerto Rico took a considerable 10-3 lead early in the game, forcing the Dominicans to deploy their best offense. The reaction began in the third inning with a six-run rally, marking the start of the comeback.
Although the Puerto Ricans tried to respond, the Dominican offense was relentless in the bottom of the sixth, where they manufactured another six runs to seal the final score of 15-11. The lack of control from the Puerto Rican pitching and the patience at the plate of the Dominicans were key factors in deciding the outcome of the game.
Feliz Genao’s performance on the mound was fundamental to keeping aspirations alive, working two and a third innings of flawless relief, allowing just one hit and keeping his ERA immaculate at 0.00.
The podium and those qualified for the World Cup
The WBSC Americas/Copabe U-18 Pan American Championship distributed four World Cup tickets, which were distributed as follows:
- United States: Gold medal.
- Venezuela: Silver medal.
- Dominican Republic: Bronze medal.
- Nicaragua: Fourth place.
With this result, the Dominican Republic positions itself among the continental powers of the category, reaffirming that the generational relay of Dominican baseball has the talent and determination necessary to compete at the highest international level in the next world championship in 2027.
