53 packages of marijuana seized at Las Américas International Airport
In a joint operation carried out this Wednesday at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA), agents from the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and members of the Specialized Airport Security and Civil Aviation Corps (CESAC) managed to seize 53 packages of a substance presumed to be marijuana.
The discovery was made thanks to intelligence work and the use of X-ray scanning technology, supported by the General Directorate of Customs. Authorities detected irregularities in two suitcases that were in the air terminal, which prompted an immediate physical inspection.
Operation details
After proceeding with the opening of the luggage under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was confirmed that the drugs were strategically hidden among various colorful quilts. The breakdown of the seizure was as follows:
- First suitcase: 26 packages.
- Second suitcase: 27 packages.
- Preliminary weight: approximately 55 pounds.
The authorities are keeping an exhaustive investigation open to find those responsible for the luggage, analyzing both flight tickets and itineraries linked to the suitcases to determine if the case is related to international drug trafficking networks.
The seized substance was transported under strict security measures to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF), where it will undergo rigorous analysis to certify its exact weight and chemical composition. So far, no arrests have been reported, but the DNCD investigative units continue to work to clarify the origin and final destination of the illicit cargo.
