Díaz-Canel admits stagnation in dialogue with the United States and reaffirms the socialist model
The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has publicly acknowledged that diplomatic talks with the United States are currently at a standstill. Despite the openness expressed by the Cuban government to establish a communication channel, the leader pointed out that there is no clear agenda that would allow for significant progress in the bilateral relationship.
Although contacts have been maintained between both nations, these have not managed to transcend into concrete results. In his statements, the Cuban leader was emphatic in pointing out that current conditions are not conducive to a full understanding.

An economy under pressure
This diplomatic landscape occurs in a context of severe economic crisis for the island. According to recent data, the Cuban economy has experienced a contraction of more than 15% in the period between 2020 and 2025. This deterioration has been aggravated by restrictions on fuel supply and sanctions that impact strategic sectors of the country.

The future of economic reforms
Regarding the economic roadmap, the government has implemented a package of 176 reforms aimed at decentralization and partial liberalization of specific sectors, of which 76.1% already have the necessary legal backing. Faced with questions about the country’s direction, the president was categorical in ruling out any intention of abandoning the current scheme.
The president assured that a capitalist restoration will not occur on the island, reaffirming that Cuba maintains its commitment to the socialist construction process. As he explained, these measures are the result of internal debates held over more than a decade and represent the official strategy to address the structural difficulties the nation is facing.
