Modernization at AILA: The new South Terminal will increase the country’s operational capacity
The Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez (AILA), is preparing for a qualitative leap in its infrastructure with the launch of its new South Terminal. This strategic project includes the integration of eight modern boarding and disembarking bridges, as well as 10 new aircraft parking positions, significantly optimizing passenger flow and the logistical operations of the air terminal.
Greater efficiency in boarding and disembarking
With the commissioning of these eight new bridges, AILA will increase its total capacity from nine to 17 direct access jet bridges. This advancement is fundamental to improving the user experience, as it will allow a greater number of flights to carry out their boarding and departure processes without the need to use buses for transport to remote positions, thus streamlining waiting and connection times.
MARS Technology: Flexibility for large-scale aircraft
One of the highlights of the expansion is the implementation of the MARS (Multi Aircraft Ramp System). Of the 10 new parking positions, three will feature this technology, which allows the same space to be adapted for different types of aircraft:
- Narrow-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 models.
- Wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
This operational flexibility will allow AILA to dynamically manage air traffic, adapting to the actual daily demand without space restrictions, which is vital given the constant arrival of larger aircraft from international markets.
With the addition of these three new positions, the airport will have a total of eight spaces with the MARS system, strengthening its position as a strategic hub in the region. In total, AILA will have 40 aircraft parking positions, consolidating a robust infrastructure in the face of the sustained growth of the aeronautical sector in the Dominican Republic.
This expansion not only addresses current air traffic needs but also positions the country as a key destination with the logistical capacity required to handle a greater flow of passengers and high-level operations, marking a milestone in the modernization of Dominican airports.
