Devotion and faith: Hundreds of parishioners celebrate Saint Michael’s Day in the Colonial Zone

The San Miguel church, located in the heart of the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, became the epicenter of a vibrant manifestation of faith this Tuesday. From early hours, dozens of devotees gathered at the historic temple to commemorate St. Michael’s Day, a date marked by gratitude, fulfilled promises, and the hope of divine protection.

The atmosphere was charged with symbolism, with the faithful arriving carrying lit candles, cakes, and other traditional elements of their faith. The use of tobacco and the colorful attire of the attendees added a distinctive mark to the day, reflecting the diversity of spiritual expressions that converge in this annual festivity.

Stories of gratitude and unwavering faith

For the attendees, September 29th is not just a day of celebration, but an opportunity to renew commitments and offer prayers for the health and well-being of their loved ones. Among the featured testimonies, that of Xiomara stands out, a devotee who attributes her son’s recovery to the saint’s intercession.

I am his number one daughter. My son had a stroke 12 days ago and now he is working in his grocery store like a lion. I come every 29th of the month to this church to thank him for his health.

Another attendee, identified as Mary, emphasized that her devotion is a family legacy. “I thank Him for life and for all the blessings I have received,” she commented, highlighting how this tradition has been passed down from generation to generation.

A day of contrasts and tradition

  • Diverse manifestations: The celebration included masses scheduled throughout the day and a penitential procession that traveled around the vicinity of the temple.
  • Inclusion: The presence of people with disabilities was observed, who made a special effort to participate in the religious acts.
  • Critical voices: Not everyone present shared the same sentiment, as some parishioners expressed their discontent, considering that their particular requests have not been answered by the saint.

Despite the different positions, the day reaffirmed the role of the San Miguel church as a fundamental meeting point for Dominican culture and popular religiosity, where faith is lived intensely and publicly every year.
