Cuba dominates Mexico and secures its spot in the 2027 Volleyball World Championship
The Cuban women’s national volleyball team has taken a firm step in the 2026 Norceca Continental Championship, securing their qualification for the semifinals after authoritatively defeating Mexico at the Prof. Ricardo Gioriver Arias Volleyball Palace, located in Santo Domingo.
The Cuban team sealed their victory in three consecutive sets with scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-20, in a match that lasted one hour and 19 minutes. With this result, the Caribbean team not only places itself among the top four in the tournament but also secures its ticket to the 2027 Women’s World Championship.
Offensive leadership on the court
The Cuban attack was led by Regla de la Peña, who stood out as the top scorer of the match with 17 points. She was supported by a notable performance from her teammates Evilania Martínez and Diaris Peña, who added 12 units each to consolidate the victory.
On the Mexican side, Grecia Castro tried to keep her team in the fight by recording 16 points, supported by Sofía Maldonado with 13 points, although it was not enough to stop the momentum of the Cubans.
With 13 continental titles in its history, the Cuban team keeps its winning tradition alive and now focuses its efforts on reaching the crown of the current continental tournament.
The path to glory
Cuba reached this stage after finishing the group phase as runner-up in Group B with a 2-1 record, having defeated Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, and recording its only loss against the Dominican Republic. For its part, Mexico reached the quarterfinals after a complex preliminary phase in Group A, where they secured their spot following a victory against Trinidad and Tobago.
The action in the tournament continues this Tuesday with the semifinal round. Expectation is growing in Santo Domingo, as the Dominican Republic national team, having qualified directly after an undefeated group stage, prepares to defend its home turf against the best nations in the region.
