Cristiano Ronaldo returns to scoring and nears 1,000 career goals
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo ended a 30-day goal drought by scoring in Al Nassr’s 3-0 victory over Al Draih during the eighth matchday of the Saudi Pro League. With this goal, the forward reaches 980 goals in his professional career, leaving him just 20 goals away from reaching the historic 1,000-goal milestone.
The Saudi team captain opened the scoring in the 22nd minute at Alawwal Park stadium in Riyadh. Ronaldo took advantage of a rebound conceded by goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah following a previous shot by Kingsley Coman, finishing with a powerful right-footed strike. This goal ends the scoring drought he had been experiencing since last September 9th.
The unconditional support of the fans
The match was marked by an emotional show of support from the fans towards the Portuguese player, following the recent controversies experienced with the coaching staff of the Portugal national team. Before the opening whistle, Al Nassr fans unfurled a banner with the message “Greatness is earned” in honor of the forward.
During the seventh minute of the match, the fans gave the player a special ovation, in a symbolic gesture that refers to the jersey number that has defined his sports career.
This support comes at a complex time for the player, who recently was involved in tensions with the coach after remaining on the bench during a UEFA Nations League match, a situation that led to his departure from the Portuguese national team’s training camp.
Al Nassr gets back on track in the local league
In addition to Ronaldo’s goal, the Riyadh side sealed the victory with goals from Samú Costa and Kingsley Coman. This result is fundamental for the team, which manages to recover after the tough defeat suffered against Al Ain in the AFC Champions League before the international break.
- Al Nassr has 19 points, tying at the top of the table with Al-Qadisiya.
- Cristiano Ronaldo maintains a 48-goal lead over Lionel Messi in the all-time top scorers record.
- The next challenge will be this Monday in the continental competition against FK Neftchi Fergana of Uzbekistan.
With his sights set on the 1,000-goal milestone, the Al Nassr captain reaffirms his commitment to the team in the final stage of his successful professional career, demonstrating that he keeps his goal-scoring instinct intact despite external pressures.
