Blow to drug trafficking in Limón: 256 packages of cocaine seized at Moín Terminal

The Drug Control Police (PCD) of Costa Rica dealt a new blow to organized crime following a successful intervention at the Moín Container Terminal in Limón. During the operation, authorities managed to seize 256 packages of cocaine and capture eight people involved in the illicit trafficking of narcotics.

The discovery occurred when agents surprised a group of individuals transferring the drugs from the cabin of a semi-truck to another area within the port facilities, a maneuver intended to evade security controls.

Involvement of a Public Force agent

Among those detained is an officer of the Public Force, identified by his surnames as Picado. According to preliminary investigations, the uniformed officer allegedly facilitated the entry of the heavy vehicle that was transporting the cargo, which has generated a firm stance on the part of the Ministry of Public Security.

Any police officer we find who is on the side of the criminals, we are going to arrest them and present them to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Operational details and background

In addition to the officer, seven workers from a logistics company operating at the terminal were arrested. The suspects were identified as Díaz, Meza, Allet, Osorio, Cooper, Arrieta, and Correa. The police report details that several of them already had a criminal record:

  • Díaz: Background of violations of the Law on Childhood and Adolescence.
  • Meza and Allet: Both previously linked to investigations for international drug trafficking.
  • Osorio, Cooper, Arrieta and Correa: Had no prior criminal records.

Additional seizures

In addition to the drugs, the authorities confiscated key items that suggest a well-structured operation:

  • 613,000 colones in cash.
  • Two firearms with three magazines.
  • 42 rounds of ammunition of various calibers.
  • The tractor unit used for the transport of the merchandise.

This action is part of “Operation Sovereignty,” which marks the fourth major blow to drug trafficking in less than a week. With these results, the Ministry of Public Security confirms it has exceeded 23 tons of cocaine seized since 2023, reinforcing surveillance at national ports to curb the flow of illicit substances to the international market.

Currently, the eight detainees are in the custody of the Limón Prosecutor’s Office, awaiting the definition of the corresponding precautionary measures while the investigation process continues to dismantle possible larger connections.
