- 1843: Juan Pablo Duarte, Pedro Alejandro Pina, and Juan Isidro Pérez arrive in Saint Thomas after being exiled due to the persecutions of Haitian President Herard.
- 1903: Eugenio María de Hostos, a key figure in the implementation of rational education in the country, passes away in Santo Domingo.
- 1965: Student leader and commander of the April Revolution, Oscar Santana, dies in an attack.
- 1981: The first edition of the newspaper Hoy is published.

- 1825: The Sucre Assembly adopts the name Republic of Bolívar for Upper Peru, a nation known today as Bolivia.

- 1977: Panama and the United States reach an agreement for the transfer of control of the Panama Canal by the year 2000.
