Man arrested for claiming diplomatic immunity for representing a “non-existent country”
An unusual episode was recorded on Route 5 North, in the municipality of Lampa, Santiago, Chile, where a citizen was intercepted by Carabineros during a routine traffic stop. What seemed to be a common traffic inspection turned into a surreal situation when the driver claimed to possess diplomatic immunity by representing the “Republic of Lemuria,” a nation that lacks real existence.
The individual, identified after a biometric check as José Miguel Martínez, 53, was driving with falsified license plates that referred to another fictitious entity called the “Wandering Republic of Menda.” When requested by the police, the subject refused to present his Chilean identity documentation, insisting on his diplomatic status under the fictitious name of Martín Carlos Adrián Lemurión.
The detainee’s stance before the justice system
After being prosecuted for the crimes of forgery of a public instrument, usurpation, and concealment of identity, Martinez regained his freedom with precautionary measures of national travel restrictions and monthly check-ins. Despite the evidence, the man maintained his defiant stance before the media, arguing that his actions were based on the right to self-determination.
My documentation is not fake. I was exercising the right to self-determination; that implies that one can declare oneself independent. It is not fake, but rather from another nationality.
José Miguel Martínez, after his appearance before the court.
Severity of the events according to the authorities
The case has generated diverse reactions in the political and police spheres. The Minister of Security, Martín Arrau, valued the effectiveness of the Carabineros in detecting this maneuver, stressing that, beyond the anecdotal, the falsification of license plates and official documents constitutes a serious crime that cannot be ignored.
- Charged crimes: Forgery of a public instrument, identity theft, and concealment of identity.
- Vehicle status: It did not have a report for theft, but all its documentation was expired.
- Context: The event occurs at a time when the Chilean Executive is seeking to strengthen its national security agenda.
The authorities confirmed that the detainee had no prior criminal record, although his attempt to evade inspection using a fabricated identity has set a curious precedent on Chilean roads, being compared for its uniqueness to other high-profile recent arrest cases.
