Dominican government prioritizes reciprocal trade agreement with the United States

President Luis Abinader reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the investment climate in the Dominican Republic. During his participation in the Second International Investment and Nearshoring Forum, the president highlighted that the State is working intensely on negotiating a reciprocal tariff agreement with the United States, seeking to position the country in conditions of high commercial competitiveness.

The head of state stressed that the country maintains the stability of the rules of the game, guaranteeing the continuity of tax incentives for free trade zones. This legal certainty is presented as a fundamental pillar to attract foreign capital and foster long-term industrial development.

Our main objective is to negotiate a reciprocal tariff agreement, as the Dominican Republic deserves, under the best possible conditions to strengthen our trade relationship with the United States.

Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic.

Strategies for competitiveness and human talent

To increase productivity, the Government has focused its efforts on key areas that facilitate business operations:

  • Technical education: Expansion of Infotep from 8 to 64 schools and strengthening of ITLA to cover areas of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital training.
  • Bureaucratic simplification: Commitment to further reduce the number of permits required for the installation of companies, improving response times.
  • Infrastructure: Strategic investments such as the Santiago monorail and the improvement of access roads to ports, optimizing logistics for productive sectors.

Abinader emphasized that, despite international challenges derived from global conflicts and changes in markets, foreign investment in the country maintains a trajectory of sustained growth. The ultimate goal is to transition toward higher value-added activities, such as semiconductor manufacturing and advanced technology.

Business perspective: The Dominican appeal

During the forum, leaders of multinationals highlighted that the Dominican Republic offers a highly attractive free trade zone structure. Executives from companies such as Eaton and Greater Goods emphasized that the availability of qualified technical talent and government support are decisive factors when expanding their operations in the region.

The event, organized by Banco Promerica, served as a platform for dialogue between authorities and business leaders, consolidating a shared vision: to turn the country into a regional benchmark for innovation and manufacturing, with the goal of doubling investments by the year 2036 through social peace and economic certainty.
