Luis Abinader defends the overseas vote and describes it as an inalienable right
The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, took a firm stance by categorically rejecting proposals that suggest the elimination of the vote for Dominicans residing outside the national territory. During his recent visit to William Paterson University in New Jersey, the president was emphatic in pointing out that any initiative of this nature represents a democratic setback.
Abinader labeled these suggestions as absurd, emphasizing that the Dominican community abroad is a fundamental pillar for the country’s development and, therefore, must maintain its right to participate in local electoral processes. His statements came in response to the arguments made by political scientist Rosario Espinal, who had questioned the effectiveness of the overseas vote based on the levels of abstention observed in the diaspora.
Any proposal that seeks to eliminate the right of Dominicans abroad to exercise their vote in our elections is absurd and a step backward.
Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic
Focused on strengthening participation
Instead of suppressing this democratic mechanism, the head of state advocated for a constructive vision. According to the president, the goal of the authorities and the political class should focus on implementing more efficient strategies and mechanisms that succeed in incentivizing electoral participation among citizens residing abroad.
Abinader’s stance reaffirms his administration’s commitment to the integration of the diaspora, recognizing its influence on the nation’s political and economic life. The president concluded his speech by highlighting the importance of strengthening ties with Dominicans abroad, facilitating their involvement in the decisions that shape the country’s future.
