Luis Abinader addresses impact of Trump’s tariffs and regional security strategies
The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, recently referred to the tariff policy announced by the Donald Trump administration. The president was emphatic in pointing out that these tax measures are permanent in nature, although he stressed that the Latin American region will benefit from the most competitive and lowest tariff levels compared to other parts of the world.
Within the framework of his statements, the head of state explained that the Dominican government maintains a constant dialogue with U.S. authorities. The main objective of these conversations is to ensure that the Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) that has linked both nations since 2004 is respected, seeking to preserve the trade conditions that have governed the bilateral relationship over the last few decades.
Commitment to security and the fight against organized crime
Beyond the economic sphere, President Abinader highlighted the progress in hemispheric cooperation to address security challenges. The president emphasized that there is reinforced coordination among the countries of the Americas to dismantle drug trafficking and organized crime networks, which operate transnationally.
The Dominican Republic plays a central role in the efforts against organized crime and drug trafficking, requiring close collaboration between nations for the effective prosecution of these criminal structures.
