Government announces expansion to four lanes of the access to Licey in Santiago
President Luis Abinader announced the execution of major infrastructure works in Santiago, highlighting the expansion of the access to Licey to four lanes. The main objective of this project is to decongest traffic in one of the areas with the greatest commercial dynamism and population growth in the northern region of the country.
During his recent workday in the Heart City, the president explained that the choice of this route responds to technical studies by the Ministry of Public Works, which confirmed that the terrain allows for the work to be carried out without resorting to the complex expropriations that would have affected other road layouts, such as those of Tamboril or Gurabo.
One of the problems we have is access to Tamboril and access to Licey. In the case of Licey, studies establish better physical conditions to develop a four-lane road, which is why we have decided to concentrate our efforts on this intervention.

Strengthening health and safety
Regarding citizen security, the head of state reported that designs are currently being prepared for the construction of a new National Police headquarters for the Northern region. This infrastructure, which will soon be put out to tender, seeks to optimize the operational capabilities of law enforcement agencies to respond more efficiently to the needs of the population of Santiago.
Likewise, the health sector will receive a significant boost with an investment of RD$1.7 billion destined for the comprehensive renovation of various public hospitals in the province. As detailed, these interventions will begin in January 2027, following coordinated planning with the Health Cabinet and local authorities.
Strategic investments in water and connectivity
- Cibao Central Aqueduct: With a projected investment of RD$9 billion, the Government will tender the modernization of the drinking water system this year, with execution starting in 2027 to update infrastructure that has been in service for over two decades.
- Air connectivity: The president highlighted the progress in the construction of the second terminal of the Cibao International Airport, a key project to manage the growing flow of passengers and boost the region’s competitiveness.
With these measures, the Government reaffirms its commitment to the development of Santiago, which contributes 15% of the national economy and concentrates more than 10% of the Dominican population, consolidating itself as a vital hub for the progress of the entire Cibao region.
