Dominican Republic stands out at UNESCO for its educational progress
As part of his agenda at the United Nations headquarters, President Luis Abinader held a key bilateral meeting with Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). During the meeting, they analyzed the significant progress made by the Dominican educational system, which has been validated by the 2026 Global Education Monitoring Report.
Boosting STEM education in Punta Bergantín
One of the central points of the conversation was the proposal to establish an institute specialized in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education within the Punta Bergantín Innovation Center. This initiative seeks to replicate the successful model that UNESCO currently implements in Shanghai through the International Institute for STEM Education (IISTEM).
The objective of this project is to strengthen training in strategic areas, promoting research, innovation, and knowledge exchange to elevate the country’s educational development.
Results that position the country in the region
The 2026 Global Education Monitoring Report highlights that the Dominican Republic has achieved steady improvement since 2015, standing out above various Latin American nations in school completion indicators. Among the most relevant data presented in the report are:
- Primary: The completion rate rose from 90% to 96%.
- Lower secondary: The completion rate went from 83% to 89%.
- Upper secondary: A significant increase was recorded, going from 56% to 64%.
Despite these advances, the Dominican Government maintains as a strategic priority the reduction of exclusion gaps, ensuring that a greater number of young people manage to complete their academic cycle. At the meeting, the president was accompanied by Minister Víctor -Ito- Bisonó and Ambassador Wellington Bencosme, permanent representative to the UN.
