Massive discovery of World War II explosives in Poland
A surprising operation was carried out on September 1, 2026, in a rural area of Płońsk, in the Masovian region, following the discovery of 710 explosive remnants of war. The material, which includes grenades, ammunition, and projectiles, was discovered by a farmer while performing field work, which immediately activated the security protocols of the local police and the Polish Army.
The official report indicates that the citizen alerted the authorities after finding unusual objects just 20 meters from rural buildings. After an initial inspection, the dangerous nature of the material was determined, forcing specialized military forces to take control of the area for its proper extraction and deactivation.

This episode highlights an issue that still affects Poland decades after the Second World War. Despite historical efforts to clear the country of mines, thousands of artifacts remain buried, posing a latent risk to those engaged in agricultural or construction activities.
Data from the General Command of the Polish Armed Forces reveal the magnitude of this challenge. In 2021 alone, more than 7,000 interventions were carried out, resulting in the neutralization of over 257,000 pieces of ammunition. Historically, since 1945, millions of dangerous artifacts have been removed, but Polish geography continues to hide war remnants that emerge with earth movement.
Recurring cases
The discovery in Płońsk is not an isolated incident. In April 2026, the Brody area, belonging to the same commune, was the scene of another similar operation. On that occasion, during excavations on private land, 49 artillery shells and 46 complementary pieces were located.
Authorities urge the population, especially those involved in scrap collection or metal detection, to exercise extreme caution. Many of these explosives, due to corrosion and the passage of time, can go unnoticed to the naked eye, becoming a deadly threat to those who handle them without the proper equipment.
