Tragedy in Colombia: 7.4 magnitude earthquake leaves devastating toll
Colombia is going through moments of deep dismay following the powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the country this Monday. According to preliminary reports provided by the Colombian Association of Capital Cities (Asocapitales), the natural phenomenon has left a tragic toll of at least 132 people dead and more than 570 injured.
The seismic movement, recorded at 07:34 local time, had its epicenter in the municipality of San José del Palmar, Chocó department, with a depth of 103 kilometers. The seismic wave severely impacted a large part of the central and western regions of the Colombian territory.
Pereira, the most affected area
The city of Pereira, capital of Risaralda, has become the epicenter of the humanitarian emergency, accounting for 60 fatalities so far. The situation in the town is critical, with the Matecaña international airport operating under closure due to structural damage to its infrastructure, specifically the roof.
Rescue efforts remain active at 15 critical points in the city. Among the most pressing situations reported are 16 people trapped in the Megacable public transport system and the collapse of multiple buildings.
State of emergency and maximum alert
The magnitude of the disaster has forced authorities to declare a red alert in the country’s main urban centers. The cities of Pereira, Cali, Quibdó, Manizales, and Armenia show the greatest material damage, accounting for at least 86 collapsed buildings and the total paralysis of operations at six airports.
Given the gravity of the events, the mayor of Pereira has implemented a curfew in the city, seeking to facilitate access for emergency teams and ensure safety in the most vulnerable areas while search and rescue operations are underway.
