Magnitude 5 earthquake shakes Granada and causes material damage
A strong magnitude 5 earthquake shook the town of Alhendín, in Granada, early this Saturday morning, causing moments of tension and various material damages in the region. The seismic movement, recorded exactly at 1:04 a.m., had a depth of 2 kilometers, which intensified the perception of the event among citizens.
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) adjusted the initial magnitude from 4.8 to 5 degrees, confirming the power of the phenomenon that affected a large part of the Granada metropolitan area. Local authorities have begun to assess the structural consequences of the event.
Impact and response of emergency services
The 112 emergency service of Andalusia reported intense activity during the early morning, receiving more than 80 calls from concerned citizens. The reports came from various Andalusian provinces, including Jaén, Almería, Málaga, and Córdoba, evidencing the wide reach of the earthquake.
The tremor has caused landslides, falling elements from facades and roofs, as well as damage in different parts of the Granada metropolitan area such as Armilla, where material damage has been recorded.
Seismic activity in the region
The situation in the area remains under surveillance, as the main event was followed by a significant aftershock and other previous movements. The recorded data include:
- A second earthquake of magnitude 2.6 with its epicenter in Gójar, which occurred just six minutes after the main event.
- Three earthquakes of lower magnitude recorded during the day on Friday in the same metropolitan area of Granada.
Residents of Granada municipalities, including the coastal area and the Alpujarra, reported everything from moving furniture to falling objects and vibrations in doors and windows. Authorities urge the population to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions in case of possible aftershocks.
