Electoral climate in the United States: The Trump factor defines voting intention

As the November 3 legislative elections in the United States approach, the political landscape appears deeply polarized. According to a recent poll conducted by NPR, PBS News, and Marist, 45% of registered voters have confirmed that their decision at the polls will be fundamentally motivated by their opposition to President Donald Trump’s administration.

The study, which surveyed 1,280 voters between September 14 and 15, reveals that the president’s impact at the polls is undeniable. While a significant portion of the electorate seeks to curb the ruling party’s agenda, 24% of respondents plan to cast their vote as a direct endorsement of the head of state, and 30% maintain that the presidential figure will not influence their final choice.

Partisan division and electoral preferences

Voting intention is sharply divided according to the citizens’ political affiliation:

  • Democrats: 80% state that their vote is a sign of rejection of the current administration.
  • Independents: 54% position themselves against Trump’s policies, while 57% of this group lean toward Democratic candidates for Congress.
  • Republicans: 59% claim that their vote will serve to support the presidential administration.

The general trend favors the Democrats, with 53% of registered voters leaning toward candidates from this party for Congress, compared to 41% who prefer the Republicans.

Voter priorities and national management

Beyond proper names, the American electorate shows a growing interest in renewal. 56% of those surveyed prefer candidates who bring new ideas, relegating to the background those aspirants who base their campaign exclusively on experience and political trajectory.

Regarding the parties’ management capacity on critical issues, Democrats lead public perception in key areas:

  • Economy: 42% trust in Democrats versus 34% for Republicans.
  • Gas prices: 40% versus 27%.
  • Foreign policy: 42% versus 36%.
  • Immigration: The closest issue, with 41% in favor of Democrats and 38% for Republicans.

Currently, Donald Trump’s approval rating among registered voters stands at 39%, while 59% disapprove of his performance. These elections, fundamental to the country’s future, will determine the total composition of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate, shaping the balance of power in Congress for the next term.
