Humanitarian crisis at the Nepal-China border: 34 Australians missing after floods
Tragedy has struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet, where a series of flash floods has left a devastating toll. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that 34 Australian citizens are currently missing following the natural disaster that has claimed the lives of at least 160 people on both sides of the border.

The Australian leader explained that the search efforts have been hindered by the complexity of the terrain and the lack of communication infrastructure in remote areas. For her part, Foreign Minister Penny Wong stressed that diplomatic authorities are working urgently to clarify the whereabouts of their compatriots.
Impact and causes of the disaster
Official figures reflect the magnitude of the event: 157 dead in Nepalese territory and three in the Tibetan area. In addition, authorities are accounting for hundreds of tourists with whom there is no contact, including 291 foreigners who were carrying out activities in the region. The Rasuwa district, in northern Nepal, was one of the hardest-hit areas, severely affecting the towns of Timure, Rasuwagadhi, and Syabrubesi.

- A previous earthquake may have caused landslides that temporarily blocked a riverbed, causing the subsequent flash flood.
In light of the emergency, the Government of Nepal has declared the affected areas a disaster zone for a period of three months. The immediate deployment of military and private helicopters has been ordered to intensify search and rescue operations, in addition to prioritizing free medical care for the injured and the urgent restoration of basic electricity and telecommunications services.
