Daniel Dye Suspended for Offensive Comments

NASCAR driver Daniel Dye was suspended on Tuesday due to inappropriate comments directed at IndyCar driver David Malukas during a recent live broadcast. In the video that circulated on social media, Dye imitated Malukas’s voice and made comments with insinuations about his sexual orientation. Kaulig Racing, the team for which Dye competes in the Truck Series, also suspended him. NASCAR ordered Dye to undergo a sensitization program.

I chose my words poorly and I understand why they upset people. I am sorry to have offended anyone. That is not how I want to represent myself.

Dye publicly apologized to Malukas through a social media post, calling his comments “careless.” He also mentioned that close friends from the LGBTQ+ community made him reflect on the importance of his actions. This is the second time Dye has been suspended. Previously, when he was 18 years old and competing in the ARCA series, he was arrested and charged with aggravated battery after an incident at a high school in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was suspended indefinitely by ARCA, but was later reinstated when the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor. In his third full season in the Truck Series, Dye joined Kaulig Racing this year. His best result in the first three races was a 13th place in Atlanta. Dye competed in the Truck Series in St. Petersburg, Florida, in a race where NASCAR collaborated with the IndyCar season opener. Malukas made his debut with Team Penske that weekend.
