Charles Oliveira Returns Triumphant in Rio de Janeiro
In a spectacular return, Charles Oliveira demonstrated his worth in Rio de Janeiro, just four months after the toughest defeat of his career. Oliveira submitted Mateusz Gamrot in the main event of UFC Fight Night. The victory came 105 days after Oliveira suffered a knockout in a lightweight title fight. Many in the sports world feared that Oliveira would return to his home country, Brazil, too soon, but there were no signs of the consequences of the defeat. This triumph further consolidates Oliveira’s legacy, who extended his UFC records for finishes (21) and submissions (17). In addition, he tied with Neil Magny for the most wins in UFC history with 24, surpassed only by Jim Miller with 27. Immediately after the victory, Oliveira reiterated his proposal to face the BMF champion and ranked lightweight Max Holloway, a match dating back to 2015.“I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This is not about money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil,” Oliveira declared.

From the start, Oliveira imposed his characteristic style, pressuring Gamrot with his high-volume Muay Thai. Gamrot, who replaced Rafael Fiziev, tried to take Oliveira to the ground in the first round, but Oliveira reversed the position and took Gamrot’s back. In the second round, Oliveira connected with punches and secured a bodylock, lifting Gamrot. Finally, he secured his opponent’s back and applied the chokehold. Before this victory, Oliveira was already ranked number 4 in UFC lightweight. Gamrot was ranked number 8. Holloway is coming off a five-round decision over Dustin Poirier in July, after which Holloway announced that he would likely take the rest of 2025 off due to a right hand injury.“Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway, BMF. Let’s make this happen,” Oliveira expressed.
