Kayla Harrison Withdraws from Fight Against Amanda Nunes Due to Injury

One of the most anticipated fights in the history of women’s MMA has been postponed. UFC bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison will not be able to defend her title against Amanda Nunes next week in Las Vegas.

Harrison, 35, confirmed on social media that he underwent surgery this week to repair herniated discs in his neck. He traveled to New York last weekend to consult with UFC doctors, who recommended the procedure.

The fight was scheduled to take place at UFC 324 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The match was to be the co-main event, preceding an interim lightweight title fight between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett.

The fight had historical weight, as Nunes is widely considered the best female fighter of all time.

Nunes, 37 years old, was going to come out of retirement, which he announced for the first time in June 2023.

Nunes and Harrison have a shared past, as they both trained at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, until Nunes left the team in 2022. She has said that the reason she left the gym was the imminent possibility of a fight against Harrison.

The UFC has not yet announced whether the championship fight will be rescheduled and when.
