Yordan Alvarez Suffers Setback in His Recovery

Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez has experienced a setback in his recovery from a right-hand fracture and will need to be evaluated by a specialist. Astros general manager Dana Brown reported that Alvarez felt pain upon arriving Tuesday at the team’s spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida, after a training session the previous day. The player also practiced batting on Saturday at Daikin Park. Alvarez will be removed from activity until evaluated by the specialist.

It’s a tough time for Yordan, but I know he’s still feeling pain and discomfort in his hand. We’re not going to force him. We’re just going to let him recover and get more answers about the next steps.

Alvarez has been out of action for almost two months. The injury was initially diagnosed as a muscle strain, but when Alvarez felt pain again while batting at the end of May, the images revealed a small fracture. The 28-year-old outfielder, who has hit 31 or more home runs in each of the last four seasons, was hoping to return this weekend against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now it’s uncertain when he’ll be able to play.

We felt it was close because he had been feeling really good lately, but this is certainly news we didn’t want.

In addition, on Tuesday, the Astros officially placed shortstop Jeremy Peña on the 10-day injured list with a rib fracture and called up infielder Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land.
