Luke Weaver to the Injured List; Devin Williams Returns to Closing Role

The Yankees’ closer, Luke Weaver, has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain. The injury, suffered while warming up at Dodger Stadium last weekend, will likely return Devin Williams to the role of closer for the New York team.

Before the start of Tuesday night’s series against Cleveland, the Yankees made six moves to their roster. Among them, they activated infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. and right-handed pitcher Fernando Cruz from the injured list.

They also recalled right-handed pitcher Yerry De Los Santos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, optioned infielder Jorbit Vivas to the RailRiders, and designated right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco for assignment.

Weaver was unable to pitch on Sunday due to a hamstring strain he felt while stretching before warming up to pitch the ninth inning in the 7-3 victory in Los Angeles. The 31-year-old right-hander is 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA and eight saves in nine opportunities.

The placement on the injured list was made retroactive to Monday. Williams, who lost the closer’s job at the end of April when he had an ERA of 11.25 in 10 games, is 2-2 with a 6.23 ERA in 25 games, saving five games in six opportunities.

Chisholm missed 28 games after suffering a right oblique strain in Baltimore on April 29. He is batting .181 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs in 30 games and played three games for Double-A Somerset from May 29 to June 1.

He will return to third base, the position he played after his acquisition from Miami on July 27, and DJ LeMahieu will remain at second base. LeMahieu made his season debut on May 13 after recovering from a left calf strain suffered during spring training and is batting .239 with one home run and five RBIs after a four-hit game in Sunday’s 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, his first since June 26, 2021.
