José Siri Returns to Action with the Mets After Injury

New York Mets center fielder José Siri has been reinstated to the 60-day injured list and started in the game against the Philadelphia Phillies this Tuesday, five months after suffering a fracture in his left leg. Siri, known for his speed, was injured on April 12 when hitting a foul ball against the Athletics and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. Acquired from Tampa Bay in November 2024 in exchange for pitcher Eric Orze, Siri was batting .050 this season and had not recorded a hit in his last 16 at-bats in the Major Leagues before Tuesday night’s game. Batting ninth in the order, he struck out in his first at-bat. The right-handed batter was activated with the Mets ready to face three consecutive left-handed starters in Philadelphia.

At the start of the game, the Mets had a three-game lead over San Francisco for the last National League wild card.

When the Mets traded for Siri, they hoped he would share playing time in center field with Tyrone Taylor. Taylor received most of the playing time after Siri’s injury, offering excellent defense, but little offense, until Cedric Mullins was acquired from Baltimore at the July 31 trade deadline. However, Mullins was batting .174 with a home run and eight RBIs in 30 games for the Mets, and Taylor was placed on the 10-day injured list on September 2, retroactive to August 30, due to a left hamstring strain. In other roster moves on Tuesday, the Mets optioned backup hitter Jared Young to Triple-A Syracuse and designated right-handed pitcher Wander Suero for assignment. Right-handed pitcher Justin Garza was optioned directly to Syracuse.
