Kyle Schwarber Postpones His Induction into the Indiana Hall of Fame

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the All-Star Game, Kyle Schwarber, has postponed his induction into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame to a future date. This is due to a rule that requires the attendance of all living members at the induction ceremony. Indiana’s induction ceremony is scheduled for September 5, the day Schwarber’s Philadelphia Phillies visit the Miami Marlins. The Phillies are looking to secure their second consecutive National League East title. Schwarber was selected in his first year of eligibility. Indiana’s athletic department announced the selections on Thursday. Schwarber was one of the school’s biggest baseball stars, leading the Hoosiers to two Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. In addition, he is among the career leaders in hits (238), home runs (40), runs scored (182), and slugging percentage (.607), with a batting average of .341.
He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, debuted in the Major Leagues the following June, and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. This season, 32-year-old Schwarber is among the Major League leaders with 37 home runs. He hit home runs in his three swings in the first Home Run Derby of the All-Star Game, giving the National League the victory over the American League. The three-time All-Star has 321 home runs and 738 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Cubs, the Washington Nationals, the Boston Red Sox, and the Phillies. Schwarber headlined the seven-member class of the Indiana Hall of Fame. The other selections are Cody Zeller, who has played the last 11 seasons in the NBA, All-American swimmer Meradith Dickensheets, the 2008 NCAA wrestling champion Angel Escobedo, former football star Mel Groomes, five-time track and field All-American Glenn Terry, and Peggy Martin, a pioneering three-sport star in field hockey, women’s basketball, and softball from 1969-72.
