San Francisco Giants Secure Tyler Mahle for One Year

The San Francisco Giants have reached a one-year agreement with right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle. Mahle, 31 years old, had an outstanding season in 2025 with the Texas Rangers, recording an ERA of 2.18, the best of his career. However, a shoulder injury kept him out of action for three months, limiting him to 16 starts. He finished with a 6-4 record, 66 strikeouts, and 29 walks in 86⅔ innings. The veteran joins a rotation led by All-Stars Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. The Giants also signed right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser to a two-year, $22 million contract earlier this month to bolster a group that ranked 17th in the majors with a 4.10 ERA last season, and which saw Justin Verlander become a free agent. Other internal options to start games include Landen Roupp, Carson Whisenhunt, JT Brubaker, Hayden Birdsong, and Blade Tidwell. The Giants also signed relievers Sam Hentges and Jason Foley to Major League contracts to add bullpen depth this winter, but otherwise it has been a quiet offseason for San Francisco, following a season in which they finished in third place with an 81-81 record in the National League West. Mahle will enter his tenth season with his fourth team. He spent his first five and a half seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before playing with the Texas Rangers and the Minnesota Twins. Overall, he has a 39-46 record in 144 games (141 starts) with a 4.07 ERA and 753 strikeouts. Injuries have limited Mahle to 24 starts and 125 innings in the last three seasons. He missed the first four months of the 2024 season with Texas while recovering from elbow surgery and was then sidelined again by shoulder discomfort.
