Adley Rutschman, Orioles Catcher, Out with Injury
Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight game against the New York Yankees.
Rutschman suffered a left side issue during batting practice, which caused a left abdominal strain.
Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino reported that Rutschman underwent an MRI on Saturday morning. The team will evaluate the possibility of placing him on the injured list for the first time in his career.
Gary Sánchez was the starting catcher for the Orioles in Saturday’s game, while Jordan Westburg served as the designated hitter. Maverick Handley, who is on the reserve team, could be called up to the roster if Rutschman is sent to the injured list.
Rutschman, 27 years old, has a batting average of .227 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs in 68 games this season.
Selected as the first overall pick of the MLB draft in 2019 and a two-time All-Star, Rutschman is batting .257 with 60 home runs and 221 RBIs in 483 career games with Baltimore.
