Frankie Montas is Designated for Assignment by the Mets
The New York Mets have designated right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas for assignment, who is in his final contract season.
Montas, who will turn 33 in March, underwent Tommy John surgery on September 9th and is expected to miss the 2026 season. Due to his contract and health status, it is anticipated that he will pass through waivers and be released.
The Mets owe Montas $17 million for the last season of a two-year contract and $34 million.
The team also selected Double-A Binghamton outfielder Nick Morabito’s contract, protecting the 22-year-old player from next month’s Rule 5 draft.
Montas signed with the Mets as a free agent in December and went 3-2 with a 6.28 ERA in seven starts and two relief appearances, making his last appearance on August 15.
In his ten seasons in the Major Leagues, Montas has a 47-48 record with a 4.20 ERA, playing for the Chicago White Sox (2015), Oakland (2017-22), the New York Yankees (2022-23), Cincinnati (2024), Milwaukee (2024) and the Mets.
Morabito batted .273 with 6 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 49 stolen bases in 60 attempts this year for the Rumble Ponies and has 108 steals in the last two seasons.
