Shane McClanahan Takes a Big Step in His MLB Return

Tampa Bay Rays’ star pitcher Shane McClanahan advanced on his road back to the Major Leagues after an absence of almost two years. The lefty had an outstanding performance in a Florida Complex League game on Tuesday, where he allowed no hits or runs in one inning of work.

McClanahan, who hadn’t pitched in the majors since August 2, 2023, due to his second Tommy John surgery, also struck out one batter and walked one.

The 28-year-old pitcher was slated to be the Rays’ opening day starter this year, but had to leave his final spring training start due to inflammation in his left triceps nerve.

The Rays selected McClanahan in the first round of the 2018 draft. In his first season in the Major Leagues in 2021, he had a 10-6 record with a 3.43 ERA in 25 starts, finishing seventh in the voting for the American League Rookie of the Year.

The two-time All-Star had an 11-2 record with a 3.29 ERA in 21 starts before getting injured in 2023.
