PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks and veteran catcher James McCann have agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract, it was reported this Friday.
The agreement also includes the possibility of obtaining up to $500,000 in bonuses, depending on how long McCann remains on the team’s active roster.
McCann, 35, joined the Diamondbacks in June and proved to be a productive player, batting .260, 5 home runs, and 17 RBIs. In addition, his performance with the team’s young pitchers, such as Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt, was highlighted.
McCann is likely to serve as a backup to Gabriel Moreno, who batted .285, hit 9 home runs, and drove in 40 runs last season. Moreno has been absent due to injuries for significant periods of the last two seasons.
McCann could earn an additional $100,000 after 50 days on the active roster, $125,000 after 75 and 100 days, and $150,000 after 125 days.
In 2019, McCann was selected for the All-Star with the Chicago White Sox, and this will be his 13th season in the Major Leagues. Throughout his career, he has a batting average of .242 and has hit 97 home runs.
