Seattle Mariners Bolster Roster with Key Additions
The Seattle Mariners have strengthened their roster by claiming outfielder Leody Taveras off waivers from the Texas Rangers, rivals in the American League West.
In addition, the team activated utility player Dylan Moore from the 10-day injured list, optioned utility player Samad Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma, and designated right-handed pitcher Luis F. Castillo for assignment.
Taveras, 26, played his first six career years in the Major Leagues with Texas, starting in center field in all five games of the Rangers’ 2023 World Series victory against Arizona. However, the Rangers placed Taveras on waivers after Sunday’s game against the Mariners. In 30 games, Taveras was batting .241 with one home run, eight RBIs, and six stolen bases. In his career, he is batting .240 with 39 home runs, 168 RBIs, and 72 stolen bases since his debut in 2020.
The Mariners will assume the approximately $3.25 million remaining on Taveras’ one-year contract, who had not connected hits in 11 at-bats this season. Moore, for his part, has not played since April 25 due to inflammation in his right hip. Before his stint on the injured list, Moore was batting .286 with six home runs and nine RBIs. In 2025, he has already started at second base, shortstop, third base, and right field in 23 games.
Taylor, 26, played in four games for Seattle since April 30, with one hit in eight at-bats. This is his second season in the Mariners organization, after debuting in the Major Leagues (31 games) with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. Castillo, 30, made two starts this season, recording an ERA of 7.71, with seven walks and only five strikeouts. He hadn’t played in the majors since 2022 with the Detroit Tigers.
