Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte shared moving details about the incident in which a fan in Chicago brought him to tears during a game against the White Sox. Mars, visibly affected, explained that the fan shouted something from the dugout that deeply struck him: “Last night I sent your mother a message.”

The incident occurred during a game in which the Diamondbacks defeated the White Sox. The fan’s comment referred to Marte’s deceased mother, Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car accident in 2017. Mars’ reaction on the field was obviously painful. MLB responded by indefinitely banning the fan from access to any stadium.

“We have to do something about the fans; they are going too far. They always shout things about me, but not about my mother. Everyone knows that my mother died in an accident,” declared Marte.
