Willson Contreras Suspended After Incident in Game

Catcher Willson Contreras has been suspended for six games and fined for an altercation that occurred during the St. Louis Cardinals’ victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, with a score of 7-6, last Monday night. Contreras has informed Major League Baseball of his intention to appeal the suspension, which means the sanction will not take effect immediately. The player was included in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Pirates. During the incident, Contreras threw a bat that accidentally hit Cardinals’ hitting coach Brant Brown, and threw chewing gum onto the field after being ejected. Manager Oliver Marmol was also ejected after a heated argument with the umpires following a called third strike in the seventh inning.

Apparently, he heard something he thought I said. I didn’t say that.

Contreras stated that he did not understand the reason for his ejection. He affirmed that he discussed balls and strikes with the home plate umpire, Derek Thomas, but that he did not address any specific pitch nor say anything disrespectful. Team manager Jordan Baker informed a reporter that Contreras and Marmol were ejected for “saying vulgar things” to Thomas. Baker also indicated that Contreras made contact with the home plate umpire.
