Brendan Donovan Exits Game with Toe Discomfort

St. Louis Cardinals player Brendan Donovan had to leave Tuesday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays due to discomfort in his left big toe. Donovan, who has played mainly at second base this season, but who served as a left fielder on Tuesday, left the game after striking out in a nine-pitch at-bat in the eighth inning, in the Cardinals’ 10-9 loss.

Donovan received treatment, but an X-ray was not performed after the game. His status is considered day-to-day.

I was running in the garden and it just started to bother me, and then it progressively got worse, and then it got really bad with me.

Donovan explained that there was no specific moment when he got injured, but rather it was an injury from repetitive use.

It’s on my left foot, so it’s the foot I tend to rotate on. I think that’s what led me to leave the game… I’ll just sleep on it, re-evaluate it tomorrow, and then we’ll see what happens.

It would be a blow to the Cardinals if Donovan were to miss any playing time. Donovan won a Gold Glove as a rookie in 2022 and is having his best season at the plate, batting .310 with four home runs and 26 RBIs as the number 3 hitter in the St. Louis lineup.

Donny is a big part of who we are here. The way he can move around the diamond and, obviously, be a really consistent anchor in that lineup in terms of driving the ball, getting on base, and driving in runs. It’s a bridge we’d have to cross if that happens.
