Corbin Burnes Leaves Game with Injury

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ ace, Corbin Burnes, was removed from the game on Sunday against Washington after only 70 pitches due to an apparent injury.

Arizona led 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Burnes allowed a single to C.J. Abrams with two outs. The right-handed pitcher then gestured towards the dugout with his glove and shouted in frustration.

Jalen Beeks replaced Burnes and allowed a run-scoring single before getting the third out. Burnes allowed one run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, with one walk and six strikeouts. His record is 3-2 with an ERA of 2.66 in 11 starts this season. Arizona signed Burnes to a six-year, $210 million contract before the season. Although he has been effective, the Diamondbacks have had to deal with a series of injuries in the pitching staff. Jordan Montgomery (Tommy John surgery) is out for the rest of the season, Eduardo Rodríguez (shoulder) is on the injured list, and reliever A.J. Puk (elbow) is also on the injured list.

On Saturday, Arizona allowed 10 runs in the first inning, their ninth loss in 10 games.
