The Colorado Rockies continue their inconsistent performance this season, adding another series sweep to their record, marking negative records.
On Sunday, the Rockies fell 5-3 to the New York Mets, extending their losing streak to eight games.
This defeat worsens their situation, as the team has a record of 9-50, the worst record in the first 59 games of any MLB team in the modern era (since 1901). Furthermore, they have been swept 10 times in 20 series, tying the most sweeps in the first 20 series with the 1962 Mets, the 1970 Milwaukee Brewers, and the 1994 Athletics.Delving into the record books, Colorado is the third team to reach 50 losses the fastest, surpassed only by the 1884 Kansas City Unions and the 1876 Cincinnati Red Stockings, who reached 50 losses in 57 games. Interestingly, the 2025 Rockies, with one more win, will be the second team to have 50 losses upon registering their tenth victory, as the 1876 Red Stockings finished their season with a 9-56 record.
In Sunday’s game, Orlando Arcia hit a solo home run in the first inning, giving the Rockies the initial lead. However, Pete Alonso responded with a three-run home run for the Mets in the fourth inning.
The Rockies tied the game in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run homer by Tyler Freeman, but Francisco Lindor responded with a solo home run, and the Rockies’ offense went cold after that.

The Rockies are 4-13 this season when scoring first; the Chicago White Sox (14-17) are the only other team this season with a sub-.500 record after taking the initial lead. The worst record in a full season since 1900 when scoring first in a game, according to the data, is 23-50 (.315) by the 1962 Mets.
The Rockies have not held a lead at the end of consecutive innings since they led for the final four innings in their most recent victory, a 3-2 triumph over the New York Yankees on May 23.
Meanwhile, the Mets won for the seventh time in eight games to complete a 7-2 homestand. They regained sole possession of first place in the National League East, moving a game ahead of Philadelphia.
Holmes (5-3) allowed three hits, struck out three and walked none. The right-hander, who entered this season with 300 consecutive relief appearances since 2019, has pitched at least six innings in six of his last eight starts. Reed Garrett and Edwin Díaz each pitched a scoreless inning, with Díaz earning his 13th save. The Rockies will be looking for their tenth win on Monday as they begin a three-game series against the Marlins in Miami.
