Yordan Alvarez: The Injury Isn’t That Serious

Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez did not suffer as serious a setback in his recovery from the fracture in his right hand, according to general manager Dana Brown. Alvarez, who was injured on May 2, had to stop after feeling pain in his right hand. He had taken some swings at the team’s spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday, and by Tuesday, the area was sore. He was examined by a specialist, who determined that the problem was inflammation and not a relapse of the fracture.

It had nothing to do with the fracture, or that the fracture wasn’t healed. The fracture at this moment is not a factor, which makes us very happy. And during the process of being examined by the specialist, we saw the inflammation, and Yordan received two injections in that area.

Alvarez had experienced problems with his hand at the end of April, but continued playing. Initially, a muscle strain was diagnosed, but at the end of May a small fracture was discovered. Brown indicated that there is no update on Alvarez’s return time, but with the latest information, “it could be in the near future”. “Yordan will be in a position where he will let it rest and let the injection take effect, and then, as soon as he starts to feel better, we’ll put a bat in his hand before he starts swinging, but we’ll just let him feel what the bat feels like,” Brown said. “And then we’ll get into some swings in the near future, but I felt that was encouraging news. Now, with this injection in the area that was inflamed, we feel much better.” Alvarez, who averaged 34 home runs in the previous four seasons, only has three in 29 games this year and is batting .210. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 2021 American League Championship Series for the Astros and finished third in the voting for the 2022 American League Most Valuable Player.
