McIlroy Positions Himself at the Irish Open with an Impeccable Round

STRAFFAN, Ireland – Rory McIlroy showcased his skills at the Irish Open by completing a bogey-free round, signing a card of 6 under par (66). This performance propelled him into contention for the title, while Joakim Lagergren of Sweden leads the tournament after an outstanding performance of 62 strokes on Friday’s round. McIlroy, with six birdies to his name at The K Club, placed third. Two of those birdies came on the last two holes, delighting the numerous galleries following the Northern Irishman on his return home.

Incredible, all day. Even just walking onto the course for warm-up today, the support is absolutely incredible. I’m looking forward to playing in that atmosphere over the next few days.

The world number 2 will now have to overcome Lagergren, who dominates the tournament with 12 under par after 36 holes, and Adrien Saddier from France, who with a round of 66 is one stroke behind the leader. Lagergren, 33, has a notable history at The K Club. In the previous edition of the Irish Challenge, held on the adjacent Palmer South Course, he set a course record with a round of 63 strokes. In addition, he achieved an eagle from a bunker on the 72nd hole, securing a one-stroke victory.
